Commercial Viability of Indian Inland Waterways

For making Inland Waterways viable, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has been undertaking various measures, like construction of terminals/ jetties, Ro-Ro terminals, Multi-modal terminals, fairway development and maintenance, channel stabilization works, river information system and provision of navigational aids etc. on various National Waterways.   Viability of inland water transport is also being ensured through inter-modal and multi-modal connectivity (Rail/ Road) of IWT terminals.

A Project Oversight Committee (POC) consisting of members of State Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal was constituted in March, 2019 for monitoring projects taken up for implementation under Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) on National Waterway-1(NW-1) from Haldia to Varanasi (1390 km).   First meeting of the POC was held in June, 2019 and thereafter meetings are held from time to time as per requirement.

This information was given by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in a written reply in Lok Sabha on December 17, 2021.
